Project Server 2010 Queue Error: ReportingWssSyncListFailed (24018) – 1101

It is a well-known fact that deleting or changing fields in the Risks and Issues that are provisioned within the default Project Site template is a frequent cause of Queue errors such as the one above.

In my experience the fields that cannot be modified are:

  • Assigned to
  • Status (the field name and drop down values)
  • Title
  • Category (the field name only)

However in general it is better to err on the side of caution and don’t delete/change any of the default fields – instead they should be hidden.

Khurram Jamshed has a nice blog on how to hide fields via the use if content types – which is considered best practice.

However I did come across one situation recently where the user had followed the best practice recommendation exactly – but the queue was still reporting an error as below:

Ironically, in this case it was the action of hiding a particular field that caused the error!!

In the users eagerness to hide fields the Links field highlighted below had also been hidden.

The links field is what enables a user to link a Project Risk, Issue or Document to a project task.

Hiding this field resulted in the queue error displayed.

So in conclusion – it is commonly known that modifying certain default Risk and Issue field lists when using Project Server 2010 will result in queue errors. The recommendation (best practice) is to hide fields that are not required (rather than deleting or changing them) via the use of content types. The exception to this rule is the “Links” field.  This field should not be hidden – as doing so will result in the same queue errors we are trying to avoid by hiding the fields in the first place.

I hope this post saves someone the frustration my client experienced when doing their best to follow best practice.
